Honest review
A resort for divers first of all — and it should be chosen with exactly that understanding. Gan island sits on Addu Atoll, the southernmost in the Maldives, 542 km from Male international airport: the domestic flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, then roughly 10 minutes by road.
Why travel so far? For the 25 dive sites next door: giant mantas, turtles, reef sharks and the wreck of a ship from the Second World War. Plan your holiday around the diving — that is this place's strength.
An honest caveat: the resort is small, the interiors are modest, and a luxury picture is not what to expect. In return you get something the luxury islands don't have: Gan is linked to its neighbours by causeways, so you can take an overland excursion to the British memorial and the wartime RAF arsenal.
A pleasant keepsake: every arriving guest receives a certificate for crossing the equator.
Who should come: divers, snorkellers and collectors of unusual points on the map. For the classic Maldivian postcard — look elsewhere.
