Honest review
If you want to gather Sri Lanka's south into one trip — ocean, surfing, whales and Galle — there is no more logical base. Cape Weligama, part of the Relais & Châteaux portfolio, stands on an unusual headland above the Indian Ocean, half an hour's drive from Galle, and the local experiences — snorkelling, stilt fishing, whale watching — begin right here.
There is one subtlety about the rooms: the infinity pools here are shared, one for every 2–3 villas. If privacy is your priority, discuss the category in advance. The villas and suites themselves are arranged like a traditional village: terracotta roofs, a garden of its own for each, spacious modern interiors within.
Worth the journey in any case — the 60-metre crescent infinity pool on the cliff edge; there are also two main pools and a cove pool.
For the active — a PADI dive centre, surf lessons, kayaks on the lakes and bike rides through a rice plantation; for recovery — a spa villa and a fitness centre; for the evening — restaurants with ocean views and locally grown spices. A resort for couples and travellers who care about level, not entertainment programmes.
