Honest review
A rare genre: not a beach resort but a historic residence within the ramparts of 17th-century Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The house has been receiving guests for more than 150 years — and you feel it, in the best sense.
Step off the veranda and you are inside a living time capsule: narrow streets, old houses, churches, boutiques and restaurants under terracotta roofs, Dutch and British colonial heritage at every turn.
The high-ceilinged suites look out on the fort and harbour on one side, on lush gardens and the pool on the other. The spa is called The Baths — calm, in keeping with the place.
The food is a pleasure of its own: a candlelit dinner served on silver in the Great Hall, afternoon tea on the sunny veranda, long lazy lunches by the pool and Sri Lanka's legendary cuisine.
Mind the logistics: it is about two hours' drive from Bandaranaike airport — give Galle its own chapter in the itinerary, not a quick detour.
For couples and connoisseurs: people come here for history and atmosphere, not for a sun lounger.
