If you are torn between the quiet Maldives and the lively kind, The Standard, Maldives is a confident argument for the latter. The first resort of The Standard chain in the region is built around the idea that something should always be happening on the island.
It is hard to go wrong with a villa: the stock is new and designed for different scenarios — as a couple, a family, a group of friends or on your own.
Two things worth planning in advance. First, dinner at the traditional festive Maldivian restaurant, the first of its kind: local cuisine in the spirit of visiting a Maldivian auntie. Second, snorkelling on the house reef: the resort stands where Raa and Baa atolls meet, near a rare cluster of corals and more than 215 species of fish.
With children, count on the kids' club and — from November to June — an inflatable water park in the lagoon: a proven way to keep everyone busy for half a day.
Who it is for: young couples, families and groups bored by the villa-restaurant-villa routine. Devotees of strict classics should look at more intimate islands.
