There is one simple quality metric that cannot be faked: before the pandemic, up to 70% of Komandoo's guests came back, and it was genuinely popular with European travellers. For a small island in the Lhaviyani Atoll, that says more than any epithet.
The resort's formula is adults only 18+, no animation and no loud parties. The core guests are married couples, for whom the island keeps very good restaurants and an unhurried rhythm: beach, long hours in the sun, and in the evening a bar with a local band and diving talk.
The main decision at booking is the villa's orientation. The south-west option gives you a beach lit by the sun all day; the north-east gives more privacy thanks to the vegetation, with views of uninhabited islands drifting in the ocean as a bonus.
The resort can also stage a wedding ceremony or a birthday celebration for your other half — the island is small, but the service is grown-up. The staff's attitude is telling too: you can see how much the island is cared for, and the team are called not staff but champions.
Who it suits: couples after quiet, romance and a holiday without children.
