The first designer resort in the Maldives, built on the principle of affordable luxury — Cocoon opened in winter 2016 and has been winning and shortlisting for international awards ever since.
The design is by the renowned LAGO studio, and it is done with rare tact: the contemporary villa interiors in natural materials don't argue with the island — they cede it the stage. 80% of your attention will still go to clean sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons and palms swaying in the wind — exactly as intended.
The island is small, crossed in 20–30 minutes, yet never feels cramped: everything is laid out with thought.
One honest minus: the house reef lies rather far from the shore. The compensation is worthy — reef sharks, rays and turtles turn up right in the lagoon, and around the island are some 50 popular dive sites, served by the instructors of a certified 5-star dive centre.
The resort is open to everyone, but it lands most precisely with honeymooners and divers: beauty and water are the lead actors here.
