The main thing to know before booking: this is not a freshly built luxury property but a 1985 building with a palace pedigree — it was raised for the first summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the status shows in every proportion. No need to fear its age, though: in autumn 2018 the resort reopened after a full-scale renovation.
The must-see inside is the atrium lobby. Look up: a dome 38 metres high, 3 metres taller than the marble dome of the Taj Mahal. Beneath the chandelier stands a custom-made crystal fountain weighing 2.5 tonnes and standing 3.5 metres tall, with a crystal vase at its centre.
A curious detail for music lovers: the Majan concert hall has housed an organ by Mander Organs of London since 1985, serviced and tuned every year.
