Four Seasons Resort At Sayan

Honest review

— an exotically styled hotel set in tropical jungle with views over the picturesque Ayung River and rice terraces inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is a 10-minute drive from Ubud, the center of the island of Bali's spiritual life.

The resort was named Indonesia's best countryside resort of 2022 by Travel + Leisure magazine. Its unusual architecture draws the eye: from above, the hotel building looks like a rice bowl, the strikingly shaped pool almost touches the river, and a suspension bridge beneath the trees adds authenticity.

The expansive hillside grounds comprise 42 villas and 18 suites. The suites are in the main hotel building, close to the kids' club and playground. Below are the villas, designed so that guests can feel utterly secluded within their space. Each has a private pool, an open-air living room and a tropical shower. The well-planned rooms feature teak furniture and rugs handmade by Balinese craftsmen, and the bathrooms have Venetian terrazzo mosaic floors.

The complex has a yoga pavilion, an impressive two-level pool and a good kids' club.

For guests there are cooking master classes, themed dinners and romantic dinners on the scenic round rooftop terrace.

The hotel is in the central part of the Indonesian island of Bali, in Sayan, by the Ayung River, a 15-minute drive from the island's cultural heart, the town of Ubud, and an hour's drive from the international airport in Denpasar. The distance to Mount Batur volcano is 40 km (1 hour 15 minutes' drive); to the Tegallalang rice terraces, 15 km (30 minutes' drive); Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, 40 km (1 hour 15 minutes' drive).
