Heritance Ahungalla

Honest review

A good way to see Sri Lanka's south-west without sacrificing comfort: Heritance Ahungalla stands on one of the island's most beautiful beaches and doubles as a convenient base for outings — a safari along the Madu Ganga river, the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda, the sights of Galle and the coastal villages.

The building was designed by the world-renowned Geoffrey Bawa — a mansion where outer and inner spaces overlap and tie the house to the surrounding nature. The rare case where the architecture is part of the holiday in itself.

The plan for a lazy day is obvious: the wide pool whose waters seem to merge with the ocean, followed by the spa with its 100% natural products — massage oils of the house's own brand, locally made herbal cosmetics, single treatments or whole packages.

The rooms are done in golden-beige tones, each one unique; the grounds are well kept, the service first-class.

Who it suits: anyone who wants to alternate a calm beach with excursions — families and couples feel equally at home here.
