Heritage The Residences

Honest review

Advice for anyone torn between a private villa and a five-star with full infrastructure: in southern Mauritius you don't have to choose. Guests of Heritage The Residences live in villas of their own but use the entire infrastructure of the chain's 5-star resorts on the island.

What that means in practice: your own pool, a kitchen, two bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a living room, a dining room and a large furnished terrace-patio with a dining area — plus the amber beach, the restaurants, the spa centres, sailing and kitesurfing next door.

The spot is well chosen: the most untouched part of the island's south, tropical gardens, the endless blue lagoon of the Indian Ocean. The Frederica nature reserve is about 10 minutes' drive away, and for a step into history there is a 19th-century plantation house.

The decor is a pleasure in itself: colonial interiors with a subtle African influence, plenty of space and light.

The logistics are simple: 25 km from the airport. Who it suits: families and groups of friends — a villa with its own bedrooms and kitchen gives everyone personal space — and couples in need of a quiet corner far from home.
