A practical reference point for anyone choosing the southern Maldives: The Residence Maldives at Falhumaafushi on Gaafu Atoll is a resort with a rare combination of seclusion and proper infrastructure.
On accommodation the advice is simple: if the budget allows, look at the water villas — from your own terrace you step straight into the lagoon. Beach villas are the calmer option, closer to the white sand. Either way you get high ceilings, French windows and custom-made furniture: the categories differ in position, not quality.
A weighty argument in its favour is the Clarins spa, the only one in the archipelago. It sits at the end of the jetty, so treatments come with a view of the lagoon and the reef.
There is plenty to do in the water too: snorkelling on the house reef and trips to nearby dive sites — the southern atolls are famous for their marine life.
One honest caveat: Gaafu is far, and the journey takes longer than to the atolls near the capital. In return there are noticeably fewer people here. A sensible choice for families and for anyone who has already seen the near Maldives.
