Honest review
A young five-star resort on Gaafu, one of the most untouched atolls in the Maldives, known for wild beaches and diving. Maamutaa is a genuinely green island: banyans, coconut palms, flying foxes, rare birds and its chief curiosity — a freshwater lake at the centre, a great rarity for the country.
The underwater side is no weaker than the land: around the atoll are numerous dive and snorkel spots, the reefs are vivid, and the encounters include rays, reef sharks, turtles and clownfish. A marine biologist works on the island — listen to his talk on the local fauna and take his walking tour.
Accommodation is both on the beach and over the waters of the lagoon, but the true highlight is the pair of overwater villas opened in 2020 with underwater bedrooms: you can watch the fish without getting out of bed. Villas like these are still scarce anywhere in the world.
The plan is all-inclusive in which everything truly is included; the island's restaurants are strong, so use that generosity without restraint.
