If mantas are the whole point of the trip, Milaidhoo belongs at the top of your shortlist: the resort sits in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, next to Hanifaru Bay, where the world's largest seasonal gatherings of giant rays occur. An encounter is close to guaranteed — with reef sharks, turtles and tropical fish in abundance as a bonus.
The format is intimate: 50 secluded contemporary villas, all with pools and ocean views, set gently into the island. The resort is adults-only — people come here for quiet and a slow pace.
The must-do is dinner at the restaurant built on three dhoni boats standing on stilts over the lagoon: glass panels in the floor reveal the underwater life, while chef Ahmed Sivath rethinks traditional Maldivian dishes.
