If you want Sri Lanka without surprises, take the proven chain: a five-star RIU in Ahungalla, right on the beachfront, the ocean just beyond the terrace.
The trade-off first: the airport transfer takes about 2.5 hours (130 km), and Colombo is 95 km away. The road is long, so this resort makes more sense for a proper holiday than a short stay.
Category advice: the junior suites with a side sea view are a solid choice for a couple — a balcony or terrace with a partial ocean view, a double bed or two singles, a kettle, minibar, air conditioning and satellite TV.
The infrastructure covers the main scenarios: three outdoor pools, a kids' club with entertainment, and the Renova spa, where beyond the classic massages there are treatments that restore you after the flight.
