The south of Sri Lanka done with taste: a resort wrapped in an open-air pool, landscaped gardens and ocean panoramas, roughly 2.5 kilometres from Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The interiors are a happy dialogue between West and Lanka: modern technology in the rooms sits alongside subtle touches of local art and architecture. The rooms are spacious, and the panoramic windows onto the bay do half the work of the atmosphere; in the evening, your own balcony serves up those Sri Lankan sunsets.
The surroundings are the main trump card: ten minutes and you are at Galle Fort; nearby is Hikkaduwa national park with its coral sanctuary, home to sea turtles and exotic fish.
The one caveat is the road: Bandaranaike international airport is about 2.5 hours away by car. Plan your arrival so the transfer does not eat the first day.
