The main compromise first: Marriott Weligama is about a 3-hour drive from the international airport (173 km). If that doesn't put you off, from here on it is only good news.
The location earns it: Weligama on the south coast, next to Mirissa beach — one of the island's most popular spots. It is a convenient base for routes: Galle Fort, Jungle Beach, Yala National Park — take not two days but a margin for outings.
The rooms shake off the journey quickly: all face the ocean, with spacious balconies, marble bathrooms with large jacuzzis, luxurious bed linen and free Wi-Fi.
Dining covers both familiar international classics and Sri Lankan cooking built on fresh fish and seafood. Add an outdoor pool, a gym and the Quan spa with a large steam room for recovering after excursion days.
If you are planning an event — from a business meeting to a celebration or a picnic by the pool or on the beach — the resort takes the organisation on itself. Suits families and couples, including those coming for a special occasion.
