Honest review
Sumadai is for those who come to Sri Lanka for the exotic and for emotion, not for sterile gloss. The location works: shops and restaurants are a couple of minutes on foot, the sandy beach a few steps away, a Buddhist temple a 15-minute walk, and the Brief gardens half an hour away.
At the same time the resort has its own private beach fringed with palms — sunloungers, parasols, the ocean.
The rooms are done in tropical style: a balcony in every one, a lake view, air conditioning, classic colonial-style wooden furniture and a sitting area.
In the evening — a DJ disco and live music; by day — excursions: sunset at the lighthouse, tea plantations, the royal botanical garden, diving and surfing, and for the hardy — the 5,000 steps up Adam's Peak.
Logistics: 90 km to Bandaranaike International Airport, the town centre one kilometre away. Come for vivid impressions and local colour — quiet and seclusion are not part of the promise.
