An oasis of calm on the Indian Ocean: Eden Resort & Spa stands in Beruwala, on one of the best beaches of the west coast, its grounds all but drowning in tropical greenery.
The resort isn't small — 158 rooms — but each is styled with a nod to local culture, and that is its character.
The dining is varied: several restaurants and dining halls on the grounds, so there is plenty to choose from.
The Ayurvedic spa is worth the trip in itself: experienced masseurs and complete relaxation. Plus a beauty centre, a hairdresser and a fitness studio.
One piece of advice: set aside half a day for the surroundings — a turtle conservation and breeding centre, a mini zoo, a mask factory and a water sports centre are nearby.
A resort for calm family holidays and romantic trips — that is the genre it does well.
