Club Hotel Dolphin

Honest review

A sensible choice for a first trip to Sri Lanka: Negombo, a long golden beach, and a resort where the kitchen and service are run by seasoned professional teams.

The location has a practical advantage: Negombo is noticeably less crowded than the headline tourist beaches, so both the shore and the grounds stay calm. If the point of the trip is to exhale and hurry nowhere, this is the right address.

When choosing a category, look at the view: rooms, suites and villas face the ocean, the pool or the garden, and the calm palette of blues and ochre is kept equally neat throughout. Keen swimmers get a pool the resort calls the longest on the island.

Dining is flexible: a buffet or an extensive a la carte menu, plus snacks and cocktails right on the beach. For activities there are river cruises, volleyball and walks along the sand; the spa has a room for couples' treatments and a manicure salon.

The format is built for both a family holiday and a romantic escape — and the resort handles either scenario with equal confidence.
