If criterion number one is the beach itself, start your search here: the resort has 400 metres of untouched golden-sand crescent on Sri Lanka's west coast, at Waskaduwa.
A practical plus is the logistics: 61 km from Bandaranaike international airport and 38 km from Colombo, with no tiring drive across half the country.
The rooms are modern — air conditioning, safe, minibar and television — with sea views. One piece of advice: there is live music and karaoke in the evenings, so lovers of complete quiet should ask about the room's location in advance.
The lobby bar makes good pizza, signature cocktails and shisha; the evening programme is regular. We recommend it to families and couples after an unhurried beach holiday not far from the airport.
