Honest review
Small and honest: just 15 rooms in a five-storey building in Hikkaduwa, about 50 metres from a first-line sandy beach. On the top floor — a pool with an ocean view.
The format is a sensible balance of price and quality: inexpensive, calm and not in the middle of nowhere — the village centre is 2 kilometres away, civilisation close at hand.
The main experiences wait all around. There's a lagoon nearby where turtles swim in almost daily — meeting them in the wild beats any farm, though there is a farm with tours too. In Galle: a UNESCO World Heritage port and a stunning Hindu temple — if the region's culture interests you, take the tour.
One detail worth knowing in advance: umbrellas, loungers and beach towels are not provided — bring your own.
Who it suits: couples and families on a sensible budget who want the ocean, the turtles and a handy base for exploring the island's south. Bandaranaike airport is 125 kilometres away.
