Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort & Casino

Honest review

A practical choice on Mahé for independent travellers: if being confined to a resort's grounds is not your idea of a holiday, this is a convenient base. First line of the beach, a public transport stop minutes away, and small shops, little restaurants and other diversions all around.

One tip: set aside a day for Victoria — a free bus runs to the capital twice a day. There you'll find Morne Seychellois National Park, the Botanical Gardens, the Natural History Museum and the Sir Selwyn Clarke market, where Seychellois colour comes in concentrated form.

The infrastructure is well developed: more than 200 rooms, restaurants and bars with cuisines from around the world, a gym and a casino. For the active — everything from table tennis to deep-sea fishing; for business events — meeting halls and conference rooms.

Families should know in advance: there is no kids' club or entertainment programme, only babysitting. For many that isn't a drawback — it's quiet.

A resort for those who value freedom of movement, infrastructure and the island's real life, not the postcard version.
