A practical base for getting to know Mauritius: the north-west coast, Balaclava, an hour's drive from the airport — with both of the north's main towns within easy reach.
The strategy is simple: days out in Port Louis or Grand Baie — both are easy to reach and worth a full day of cultural exploring — and evenings back at the pool. For children there are water slides in the outdoor pool and a kids' club, so the family routine builds itself.
One piece of advice on rooms: travelling as three or with a child, take a room with a sofa — otherwise the set-up is identical: a very large double bed, balcony, air conditioning, minibar, tea and coffee.
Bear in mind the main thing: Le Goulet beach is 200 metres away, so you won't step barefoot from your room straight onto the sand. If a true beachfront is essential, look elsewhere; if smart logistics around the island matter more, this is an honest working option.
