A resort for those who want the Maldives with substance, not just a sun lounger: the waters around this island in Noonu Atoll are a nature reserve for sea turtles, a rich house reef starts a few metres from the shore, and the resident marine biologist gives educational talks.
Divers should set aside more than a couple of days: there are 34 world-class dive sites nearby, including Christmas Rock and Orimas Thila.
The accommodation is no weaker than the water: the villas are among the largest in the Maldives, set at least five metres apart, with simple yet refined interiors and panoramic glazing. Privacy here is not a marketing word but a planning decision.
The gastronomy plays to Maldivian authenticity: themed dinners at Palms, a weekly Maldivian evening, fresh catch from a local fisherman that the chef prepares to your choice, and bonfire evenings with traditional stories.
After its rebranding the resort joined IHG's Vignette Collection. Recommended for couples and for anyone who wants to feel a place rather than simply tick off five stars.
