The Blue Water Hotel And Spa

Honest review

A resort worth the trip for the architecture alone: Blue Water was designed by Geoffrey Bawa, the Sri Lankan architect regarded as one of Asia's most influential of the twentieth century.

This is one of his iconic works: minimalism, long corridors, open vistas, water, terracotta tiles and frangipani wood. Bawa deliberately removes the barrier between interior and landscape, so the ocean is present in almost every frame — the rooms look out over the Indian Ocean.

The resort stands among the wild coconut groves of Wadduwa, and the red-orange evening sunsets are a daily local ritual.

On the practical side: Colombo is 33 km away, and the airport transfer takes about two hours — build that into your first day.

Who it suits: families and groups of friends — and, separately, anyone with a weakness for architecture.
