Honest review
A modest five-star in the south-west of Sri Lanka that wins on setting rather than polish: cliffs, the ocean and a very green estate.
Don't come looking for frills or refinement — and that is Thaproban Pavilion's honesty. Everything essential is here, with local colour thrown in: you can meet a chipmunk right on the grounds, and while admiring the cliffs suddenly spot peacocks.
The soundtrack here is waves breaking on the rocks. Plus an ocean view that never gets old.
One thing to weigh up: the walk to Unawatuna beach takes about 15–20 minutes. If stepping straight onto the sand is essential for you, this is not your place; if you don't mind a short walk, you get quiet and the cliffs in return.
Who it suits: couples and anyone who wants to live by the ocean away from the crowds, with Unawatuna's entertainment within arm's reach.
