Thambapanni Retreat

Honest review

The trick of this place is its position: you live in the quiet of the jungle and swim at Unawatuna. The beach, called one of the best in the world, is just a few minutes away on foot.

The beach earns its fame: a long sandy stretch, a gentle entry and calm water, plus a scenic coral reef — snorkellers and divers will find plenty to do right off the shore.

The resort itself is tucked into greenery, and you should be ready for that: your neighbours are birds, monkeys and chipmunks rather than cars and tuk-tuks. Anyone after sterile urban silence will find it too lively; anyone coming for nature has hit the right address.

Allow a couple of days for the surroundings: the port town of Galle, national parks and Rumassala hill are close by, and the staff will help arrange an island journey on request.

A sensible choice for couples and independent travellers who want to combine jungle, reef and nearby sights — without long transfers.
