Who to recommend Saman Villas to: couples who want seclusion, not infrastructure. The resort stands on a cliff above the shore — with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and that very sense of getting away from it all that draws people to Sri Lanka’s south.
When planning, keep the format in mind: this is an intimate story of gardens, calm and personalised service, not a place with animation and water slides.
The compulsory item on the programme is dinner. Change the setting every evening: the restaurant with Arturo Álvarez’s handmade lighting across four dining areas, the terrace by the infinity pool, your own veranda or your room with its ocean view — that is how the resort reveals itself fully.
The activities are measured and right: walks along the untouched Bentota beach, swimming in the sea, spa treatments, the gym.
The rooms are contemporary, with traditional Sri Lankan accents and works of art.
