A practical plan for southern Sri Lanka: stay by Unawatuna beach and collect your impressions around it — and Joe's Resort Unawatuna fits that scenario better than most.
Nearby are the Japanese peace pagoda and a sea turtle farm with a hatchery; a little further, the old town of Galle, a UNESCO heritage site. One piece of advice: don't stop at the beach — whales are watched here, and the watching tours sit alongside diving, snorkelling and water skiing.
Within the resort itself the main draw is the rooftop infinity pool overlooking the bay: spend the sunset hour there.
The rooms are without excess but with everything needed: a balcony facing the ocean and beach, a tropical shower, climate control, a safe, tea and coffee, robes, free Wi-Fi. The Joe's collection has been at it for over 12 years and stakes its name on individual service.
Suits families and couples travelling for sea plus country, not for a sealed island of service.
