a modern beach hotel in south-west Sri Lanka that calls itself the largest hotel in Panadura.
We won't vouch for that: for all its merits, the grounds of Jie Jie Beach are fairly modest, if well kept. And frankly, square metres are the last thing you want to be paying attention to here.
The hotel's first (and very substantial) advantage is its wonderful location. Just 1.5 hours' drive from the airport makes this place a coveted option for many travellers, compared with similar choices 3-5 hours away.
At the same time, from the hotel it is easy to reach Sri Lanka's other popular beach resorts, such as Bentota or Hikkaduwa.
A car is not the only way to get around the island in these parts. There is a railway near the hotel, so those wanting a taste of local colour can travel to Colombo, Kandy, or Galle by train. It turns out not only atmospheric but also faster than by car or bus.
Within walking distance are stalls with freshly squeezed juice and crisp pastries, supermarkets, the local market, and a variety of cafes and small restaurants.
